Demis Hassabis is a British artificial intelligence researcher, neuroscientist, and entrepreneur. He studied computer science at Cambridge and later completed a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at University College London. Before founding DeepMind in 2010, he built a reputation as a video game designer, most notably at Bullfrog Productions and through his own studio, Elixir Studios.
DeepMind was acquired by Google in 2014 and operates as part of Alphabet. Under his leadership, the organisation produced AlphaGo, the first programme to defeat a world champion Go player, and AlphaFold, whose protein structure predictions have been widely adopted across the biological sciences. In 2024, Hassabis was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, jointly with John Jumper and David Baker, in recognition of AlphaFold's contribution to protein structure prediction. He holds the position of Chief Executive at Google DeepMind.
